Jane and Dee sketched Comet Holmes.

17P/Holmes is a periodic comet in our solar system, discovered by the British amateur astronomer Edwin Holmes on November 6, 1892. In only 42 hours in October 2007, the comet brightened from a magnitude of about 17 to about 2.8. This represents a change of brightness by a factor of about a million times, and is the largest known outburst by a comet.

17/ P Holmes Bray Co Wicklow Ireland. 19:27 UT 05/11/07 Reflector FL1200 / 15mm eyepiece / 80X Seeing 3, Transp Poor Sketched with Schmincke Soft Pastel/ Conte Crayon/Gel Pen on black Daler Rowney 200 gm Matt paper. Image rotated.

On the evening of November 5th, Holmes seemed to have a soft tail that was just becoming visible. That edge was slowly becoming ragged and less defined. This was very different to the almost perfect misty sphere of earlier in the week. A firmer more prominent leading edge gave a visual impression of movement away from the nucleus and its promise of a tail. More comet sketches are here
