Mars Sketches May 29, 2001

Here is the first of three sketches of Mars through the 105mm f/6 Astro Physics Traveler refractor using a 2.3mm Lanthanum eyepiece for a magnification of 265x.

Central meridian is 85 degrees longitude and the sketch was made at 09:02 UTC May 29, 2001. Seeing was exceptionally good. Subtle clouds over the three Tharsis Plateau volcano calderas and over Olympus Mons were visible. Large white areas are Chryse and Argyre.

This sketch can be seen in the August 2003 Astronomy magazine article "Get ready for Mars" by Michael Bakich. It's on page 85.
